Self-Determination

Self-Determination staff guide participants who choose to direct their own services, budgets, and life plans. The role centers on coordination, education, and advocacy rather than hands-on residential support.

Staff help participants understand their options, manage individualized budgets, and build plans that reflect their personal goals and values.

What you’ll do in this role

Working in Self-Determination involves walking alongside participants as they shape the supports they receive. Staff explain how the model works, help track and plan spending, coordinate with providers, and support participants during planning meetings — always centering each person's choices and priorities.

Key responsibilities

  • Explain how the Self-Determination model works and how it differs from traditional services
  • Help participants understand allocated funds and develop spending plans
  • Assist with tracking expenses and coordinating with fiscal management services
  • Support participants in identifying, evaluating, and coordinating preferred service providers
  • Facilitate person-centered planning sessions and document measurable goals
  • Provide guidance during planning meetings and help participants advocate for their needs
  • Adjust supports as participant needs and priorities evolve
  • Document progress and communicate with the support team as needed

What this looks like day-to-day

  • Meeting with participants and families to review goals and spending plans
  • Coordinating with providers, regional centers, and fiscal management services
  • Preparing for and attending person-centered planning meetings
  • Helping participants weigh options and make informed decisions
  • Reviewing progress and updating plans as priorities change
