What independence looks like

Behind every program is a person working toward a life they choose. These are some of their stories, shared with their permission.

Robert's first place

When Robert joined My Life Services in 2020, he wasn't looking for a place of his own. He just wanted to build his independence, living on his own felt out of reach.

At the time, his uncle had given him a place to land during a hard stretch: a sectioned-off part of the garage with a small electric stove and just enough room to get by. It was a real kindness that kept him going, but it wasn't a space where he could fully build a life of his own.

Robert came to us to work on everyday skills, not to move out. Living on his own wasn't something he could picture back then, and he didn't expect much of himself.

So when a spot at Integrity Cottages first opened up, he wasn't ready. Moving out felt like too big a leap, and he let it pass. That was okay. Independence happens on your own timeline.

Over the next year, Robert and his ILS instructor kept at it: saving money, cooking, managing a household, making his own decisions. Bit by bit, the picture changed. When the opportunity at Integrity Cottages (a Project-Based Voucher community) came back around about a year later, Robert was ready, and this time he said yes.

Today, Robert lives independently in his own studio, something he once couldn't imagine. His My Life Services team still supports the routines and goals that matter most to him.

RR's own front door

RR moved into his own one-bedroom apartment, paying just 30% of his income in rent through a Project-Based Voucher.

RR joined My Life Services in 2022. Before MLS, he didn't have a place of his own, moving between temporary arrangements made it hard to plan a life on his own terms.

Working with our team, RR set a clear goal: housing on his own terms. That work paid off when he used a Project-Based Voucher to move into a full one-bedroom apartment, where he now pays 30% of his income in rent, making independence financially sustainable for the long term.

MLS continues to walk alongside RR, supporting the routines and choices that make this home truly his.
